About Productions in Print

Your playscript, brought to life in a paperback book

Productions in Print (PIP) formerly an imprint of Smith and Kraus Publishers, is now its own entity, PRODUCTIONS IN PRINT, LLC. Marisa Smith is the Publisher. Despite the pandemic, PIP has continued to publish PIPs and has new books scheduled for 2021.

PIP was originally designed to create books that would be sold in the theater lobby, books that contained the script of the play (and ancillary material) that was being performed on stage at that moment. Obviously, theaters were dark in 2020 and will be for some part of 2021 -- hopefully not too much longer! However, we discovered that some theaters, like THE CIVILIANS in NYC and THE EPIC THEATER ENSEMBLE in NYC, as well as a handful of playwrights, used this period to put together PIPs of past productions to use as promotion. We will be featuring those PIPs on our website as soon as they are completed this winter.

In the meantime, we invite you to peruse our collection of past PIPS here on the website.

Creating a PIP is a very simple process and I'm happy to discuss the details on the phone. Please email me at marisaproductionsinprint@gmail.com and we can set up a phone chat.

Create Your PIP

Create PIPs for all of your productions and feature these beautiful books at your theatre and online, providing an afterlife for your productions and as an ongoing revenue stream. The PIP is also a marvelous outreach & fundraising tool, as well as a promotional vehicle for the playwright.

The idea of selling the script of the current play on stage in the lobby of the theater is not a new one. This is done frequently in theaters in London but why not here in America? Who says the Brits are more literary? Well, maybe. At any rate, Smith and Kraus, inspired by the London theater, decided to upgrade the script and give it an American twist...by adding photos, essays, and any kind of ancillary material to the script to make the book more complete and interesting.

We launched our first PIP at the Washington DC Shakespeare theater with DAVID IVES' lively, witty, very funny adaptation of Pierre Corneille's THE LIAR. The PIP was a huge success and sold over 1200 copies in it's 6-week run!

Pips are being sold at theaters across the country including, Center Theatre Group, Circle in the Square, Dorset Theater Festival, Company One Theatre, Goodman Theater, McCarter Theater, New Jersey Repertory Theater, Northern Stage, Playwrights Horizons, Roundabout Theater Co., Shakespeare Theatre Co., Studio Theater, University of Delaware Rep and many more!
